Amazon Affirms Layoffs in Alexa Division, ‘Several Hundred’ Affected

Amazon recently announced plans to trim “several hundred” positions within its Alexa unit, withholding specific details on roles, affected initiatives, or the total count of impacted employees. Employees based in the U.S. and Canada received notifications about the job cuts, with plans to inform others, including those in India, in the following week. The company clarified that the adjustments align with evolving business priorities and a focus on maximizing resources for generative AI, leading to the discontinuation of certain initiatives and role eliminations.

Though representing a small fraction of Amazon Devices’ workforce, the decision was deemed necessary while expressing optimism about Alexa’s future. With over half a billion Alexa devices in homes, Amazon remains committed to enhancing the platform’s intelligence and usefulness through investments in generative AI. During the Q3 earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy highlighted advancements in Alexa’s conversational AI, enabling more natural and simultaneous requests. Emphasizing their commitment to generative AI across their businesses, Jassy hinted at forthcoming developments.

This downsizing announcement adds to Amazon’s recent series of layoffs over the past year. Notably, the company confirmed substantial cuts in January, eliminating 18,000 roles, followed by an additional 9,000 in March, and approximately 180 roles from the Amazon Games unit. These adjustments reflect the company’s strategic realignment and evolving technological focus.
