TechSmith Elevates Open Enrollment Participation by Embracing Video-Based Approaches

TechSmith’s HR department had to overcome a major hurdle during open enrollment in the pre-pandemic days. Amy Casciotti, the VP of HR at TechSmith, indicated that more than 20% of the employees had not even begun the enrollment process. TechSmith’s human resource team employed a unique strategy to give out crucial information about benefits within the organization before the open enrollment period. In addition, the transition to video increased open enrollment rates from 80% to 100%, and the HR team could now communicate with each employee on a more personal level. The company used videos as a means of making the information more accessible and engaging.

TechSmith’s HR Department carried out a 90-minute information session for the employees, these sessions still do exist; however, they are now combined with videos that provide employees with essential open enrollment information as well as a guide on how to go about the enrollment process.

At present, TechSmith is working on similar videos for the 2024 open enrollment period, which will provide an interactive table of contents, allowing viewers to choose different videos based on their specific needs, whether they want a quick overview or more in-depth information.

The shift to video-based training came at an opportune time for TechSmith. With the company transitioning to a hybrid work model, employees are only required to be in the office for 20% of their workweek. Video-based learning offers the flexibility for employees to consume information at their convenience and revisit it as needed, catering to the analytical nature of TechSmith’s workforce.

Before introducing videos, TechSmith’s open enrollment completion rate typically hovered around 80% by the deadlines. However, last year, the rate surged to 100%, marking a substantial improvement. Beyond boosting enrollment rates, the videos have allowed the HR team to build trust with employees by providing a more personalized touch. TechSmith encourages their staff to let their personalities shine through in the videos, creating a more comfortable environment for employees to seek advice or ask questions.
